Summer Essentials

graphic from Young Living

What do you need for summer?

There it is. Right up there. The graphic says it all!!
In addition to those products, we’ll also cover a couple more that I think are ESSENTIAL for summertime sun and fun. But first, we’ll cover the basics.

Sunscreen is one of those products you need so you don’t get sunburned and subsequently have sun damage or even worse (like abnormal cells), BUT traditional sunscreens, like the ones I grew up with, contain a host of chemicals and substances you do NOT want BAKED into your SKIN!

This isn’t new information. If you check out websites like (The Environmental Working Group) or, there are articles, information, and guidelines to buying healthier, safer sunscreen options.

My favorite just so happens to be Young Living’s Mineral Sunscreen because it comes in my monthly box whenever I need it!! One tube has lasted over a year for our family of 4 because you need such a little amount when applying. Even with reapplying every few hours, my first tube is still 3/4 full! That is a GREAT deal!!

Also, Young Living has a “Reef Safe” rating, which means you can use it in the ocean! There are some vacation areas that are refusing to let certain sunscreens on their beaches, resorts and oceans because of the chemicals damaging the sea life. Not this one!!

I got this one for free at some point, and never really used it, but this spring I got a MAJOR sunburn one day (I was NOT wearing sunscreen at all – dumb) and my skin hurt. I started spraying this on my face and chest and it felt SO much better! My son got bit by a dog and we sprayed it on the bite – SO much better! It’s just become one of the things we keep out and available for ANY skin irritation, rash, bug bite, whatever! It’s been a LIFESAVER this year.

We live in mosquito-land and although we had a cold spring, the bugs are starting to come out at night. My kids play baseball and my husband and I enjoy being outside in the evenings. In the past, bugs have driven us inside when it became dark outside. I tried a variety of DIY bug sprays and although some of them did kind of work, nothing has been as good as this one!! Seriously. A DEET-free, plant-based, insect repellant?? YES PLEASE!! Safe for kids, dogs, and all people. We pour ours into a spray bottle and thin it out with a little witch hazel to help it spray better and we are set!!

Other Summer Favorites

In addition to the PERFECT summer necessities in the picture above – seriously LOVE those!!- I also have my summer list of things I need in the summer.

  1. Probiotics – I LOVE junk food – chips and dip, mayo-based salads, hot dogs on the grill, drinks on the deck – you name it!! MightyPro helps keep my tummy chugging along so that I can digest and detox my body from all that junk I ate. Whoops.
  2. Citronella oil – We just drip this into the diffuser, plug it in on the deck and keep bugs clear from our little area. LOVE it!!
  3. Lavender – This helps with all skin-type needs. Bites, rashes, unexplainable itches, sitting too long in the sun, you name it! Also great for camping and sleeping at night as bugs don’t like the smell of lavender AND it helps calm your overtired kids and helps them sleep in a different bed/tent.

Those are MY favorites!! Anyone have some of theirs?? Did you want to get some of your own?? Click here to get any of the products above!

But it’s too expensive…

I hear this ALL the time when slinging oils (ha!!). But this month, I’m working on a CLASS that I will be giving in person for those that know me and on Facebook for those in my Facebook group and the whole point of the class is to show people how truly cost effective using oils is.

We’ve discussed the toxicity in the household including chemicals used in your home. That was enough for ME to change my ways, but I know other people have other motivations. We’ve discussed healthy lifestyle choices; better skin, better sleep, better everything. But maybe you’re the type that needs that extra push. One more reason that these oils are ACTUALLY WORTH it. Enter my new class and blog series: Essentially Less Expensive.

I will be breaking down the cost of items and comparing them to similar store-bought items. This month is all about SAVING YOU MONEY!!! I will show you just how that works by providing a store product, Young Living option, and DIY option. Like this chart below:

It pretty much speaks for itself. I personally prefer using natural household cleaners for my family. We try to limit our use of chemicals and plastics as much as we can and this is something I CAN control.

I started with purchasing “greener” cleaners from Target or my local natural foods store. I felt better about using these, but although they were better options, they still contained chemicals that are potentially hazardous to my health and my family’s health. They still contained chemicals that I was washing down the drain into the water system and eventually into the environment.

When I started using essential oils, I started making DIY Household Cleaners using vinegar, water, soap, and oils. For me, I felt better about using these non-chemicals in my home. This cleaner recipe works well and I was able to use the cleaner on most everything – even on my wood floors. Change the oils up if you want to – citrus smells great, pine is nice in the fall/winter and cinnamon bark is one of my favorites to add!!

When I bought my first bottle of Thieves household cleaner and realized I can use that for absolutely EVERYTHING in my home, that was the end. I can literally stand in the bathroom and spray this on EVERY SINGLE SURFACE. Which, when you have two little boys, you know is VERY important. Look at the cost breakdown above. Even if I chose to use 2 oz. for each bottle of cleanser it would still be the same price as the junk I used to buy at Target. SO. WORTH. IT.

What do you use? Do you have a good recipe?? Do you want a hook up for Thieves cleaner?? I have a link here for my oils store – do yourself a favor and get the Thieves cleaner today!!

Skin Detox: Day 1 – You Are What You Eat

Has anyone ever sat down with a bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos, eaten them all and woken up with a rash the next day? Is it just me?

Ever since I was a teenager, advice for my skin involved watching what I ate. If I ate greasy food, my skin would be greasy as well. If I ate chocolate, I’ll break out. But as a grown adult, I FINALLY see it now! It only took 20 years!  So I can’t eat Spicy Nacho Doritos. Even though I love them. They give me a rash – not a pimple, but a weird face rash.

So let’s talk about this Diet thing as it relates to your skin. Here’s the most important thing you need to remember: YOU NEED A DIET THAT WORKS FOR YOU!!!!  Maybe you can totally put down a bag of Doritos, while I’m over here seething that I can’t do that if I want clear skin. That’s fine! We are ALL DIFFERENT!!!

I’m totally sick of hearing that I have to try Paleo, Keto, a Whole 30, Weight Watchers, Vegan, Vegetarian, don’t drink milk, don’t eat carbs, eat your body weight in protein, blah blah blah!! Isn’t it enough???  I’ve done it all. I personally can’t eat a lot of meat, and red meat makes me physically ill. I need carbs. They shouldn’t be in the form of a loaf of bread, but I need carbs or I have literal panic attacks. Why? I’m not sure – it’s science and it’s MY BODY!!!

So I encourage you to go out there and figure out what works for your body! I have tons of friends that do so well on Keto or Paleo and they LOVE it. Not for me. Talk to a doctor. Talk to a dietician. Talk to a naturopath or someone. Try it – see what will work for you.

That being said, it’s common knowledge these days that the chemicals in processed food will make you fat. You should eat a diet that varies in food types – try not to get stuck in a rut!  Eat Real Food. Mostly Plants. Michael Pollen, Deepak Chopra, a variety of Ayurvedic medicine practitioners all say that. That doesn’t mean that you can’t eat meat. It means to add more plants to what you already are eating.

So what should I eat?

Eat the best diet for you. If you have dry skin hydrate with tons of water and increase healthy fats! Those will help plump up your skin. If you have oily skin, you might have liver buildup or metabolism problems – look at how much fat you’re eating. In this case, fat can be building up in your system and coming out as oil. Do you have frequent breakouts? Your elimination organs might be overwhelmed (kidney, liver). Take it easy on those guys. Drink more water. Stop eating after supper and allow them to have some time to digest and rid your body of food, toxins, and waste. Is your skin red or rashy? You are having an allergic response to something or maybe the inside of your body is too “hot”. You’re eating spicy foods and need to cool it down. Like me, and the Spicy Nacho Doritos. I need to combat that heat with cooling foods like yogurt.

Circulation is important.

In order to have optimal blood supply to your skin to improve texture, color, and get nutrients to where they should be, you need to improve your overall cardiovascular health. You can do this by increasing certain foods that contain antioxidants and have general healthy benefits such as berries, citrus fruits containing Vitamin C – especially LEMON, avocado, chia, whole grains, almonds, pumpkin seeds, garlic, and dark chocolate.  If you are currently working on improving your blood and cardiovascular system you should avoid animal fats, dairy, soy, gluten, vegetable oil, caffeine and alcohol. I know those are all fun – wine and cheese? coffee and cream? But if you want healthier skin, give it a go!

Give your liver a hand.

Your liver takes great care of your body. All things flow through that organ and its job is to detoxify junk and organize nutrients to get where they are going. Your liver is so busy all day long working on detoxing metals, environmental toxins, processed food chemicals, chemicals in water, and air, and then if you have a drink or two at night – it’s busy working on that too! So you want to help your liver out.

Do so by decreasing the amount of animal protein you eat and INCREASE the amount of nutrient dense plants you consume. Eat more greens, fruits, veggies. You know you should, now you just have a reason WHY!! Avoid fried foods.Eat more zucchini, squash, beans, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, apples, bananas, grapefruit, beets, leafy greens, avocados, broccoli and cauliflower. Yum!!

Limit processed foods and limit medications if you can. This for me is where essential oils came in. If I get an ache or pain that I would normally have taken an over-the-counter medicine for, I will now try an oil FIRST. I still may end up taking the medicine, but I’m greatly reducing the impact these meds have on my liver by managing my needs with other things. Have a headache? Drink more water. Take a nap, Try Peppermint oil. If that doesn’t work – grab the ibuprofen. Period Cramps? Same thing – drink water, take a rest, stretch, use Peppermint or PanAway on my stomach. Then reach for the meds. Do you see what I’m saying? Listen to your body. You might not be in the same position I am yet to hold off on meds right away; only YOU will be able to know that.

Drink warm lemon water and green tea as well as water. This will help flush those toxins out of your body and support your liver to do it’s thing.

Where should I start??

I know, that’s a lot of info. I get it. So here’s a little list you can use to start changing your diet and routine up a little bit in order to help your skin (and body) out!!

  1. Drink water with lemon.  Try it warm or hot.
  2. Drink green smoothies!!! ADD GREENS to your diet!! If you don’t like it – try something like Multigreens.
  3. Take a probiotic to help your gut out!! I LOVE Life 9 and my kids totally dig MightyPro.
  4. Become Veggie Centric with your meals. Eat protein if you want but ADD MORE VEGGIES!!!
  5. Use seeds for Omega 3s – I like Chia or Flax. You can try Omegagize too.
  6. Use Turmeric. Make a little Turmeric Latte – add Thieves or Black Pepper EO to give it a boost.
  7. Drink herbal tea.

Give it a try!! I would LOVE to see your results or hear about things you loved!!!

Running on Empty: How to Restock your Premium Starter Kit

So you got yourself a kit. You love it. You use it. You are out of Lemon. Or Lavender. Or Peppermint. What should you do??

The first time this happened to me, I bought myself a whole new starter kit. Yep. That was NOT smart. But I loved them all – how on earth could I choose??  I came across a graphic after my second starter kit that showed me just how to OPTIMIZE my oil purchases so that I could restock my kit AND earn points back!! Enter Essential Rewards.

I know, I’ve talked E.R. before. And you know that it’s a great loyalty program where you get points back and also get freebies during promotions. If you don’t know that click here for that blog post.

So with all of that, I’ve created a little Infographic that you can use, share, whatever helps to make it an easy process for you!! Also, these are just my ideas, so if you don’t like it – don’t use it! 🙂

So what you need to do first is log in to your Virtual Office. On the left hand side, there is a link to “Essential Rewards”. Click on that and choose a date of delivery. This will stay the same every month unless you change the date. You will get an email a day or two before your order is scheduled to go through to remind you to check on that order. I think this is so awesome!! It really helps me when I realize that I have to add/take away things before my order processes.

If it’s your first 3 months on ER, you will earn 10% back on your entire Essential Reward order. Months 4-24 earn 20% back and 25+ earn 25% back!! On top of that, you will earn loyalty oils at 3, 6, 9, 12 months. AND on top of THAT you will earn monthly promos usually for 100 and 190 PV. Don’t quote me on that 😉

It just makes sense!! Don’t you agree??

Back to School: 5 Oils You Need To Get Ready For The School Year

My other job is in a school. I am not only a Young Living Distributer and blogger, I am also a school-based Speech/Language Pathologist. This is my 14th year starting school as an SLP and every fall I get really excited to start fresh another year!!  This year I have some changes in the way I’ve been providing service, so I know there is going to be a learning curve. I also work in a primary school building – Preschool through 2nd grade. You know what that means – GERMS!!! So without further ado, I am going to give you my TOP 5 BACK TO SCHOOL OILS!!!

#1: Thieves

This is a “duh” to me. Thieves smells like fall and gets me in the mood for the fall time – add a little orange, and it smells like Heaven!!  Thieves is also a great immune-booster that you all need in your homes. We are going from our outside, summer lives to joining 600 other people in one building. You NEED TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!!!

-Diffuse Thieves when your kids are doing homework. It smells great and helps their little immune systems out!

-Add to a carrier oil in a roller bottle and keep out for the kiddos. My boys roll it on their spines when brushing their teeth in the morning. You can put it on their feet as well, but we usually forget until after socks are on.

-Add a drop of Thieves Vitality to your coffee or tea in the morning. It makes it taste similar to chai tea – yum!!! Plus it’s an extra immune boost!!

-Make a spray bottle with some water and Thieves to spray on doorknobs, light switches, and in the air! It’s not going to hurt anything, right?

#2: Orange

Orange is GREAT for a little boost in the morning! It’s also so good added to many, many oils. I love it with Peppermint, Joy, Thieves, and more! Orange can be used for SO many things; it can help support your nervous system, give you a little energetic boost, and is also a great immune booster.

-Diffuse Orange and Thieves together to boost that immunity!!

– Add Orange to any of the Emotional Oil blends to “tone down” the flowery smell

– Add Orange Vitality to your water in the morning for a great boost

– Orange and Peppermint together are GREAT for aiding digestion (and the Orange again tones down the Peppermint)

#3: Peppermint

Peppermint is seriously my “go-to” oil for most things. I LOVE the smell. When I diffuse this with Lavender and Lemon, it provides the seasonal support I need when it changes over to fall. Peppermint is great for muscle support, lung support, digestive support, and support for your central nervous system. This oil encourages me to take deep breaths which is something we definitely ALL need to improve!

-Rub Peppermint on your muscles if you feel tension – I always have tension in my neck and forehead – Pepp is my jam!

-Rub Peppermint on your tummy if you ate too much or have a nervous tummy about starting school – this is a big one for my kiddos! They get nervous and a little teeny bit of Peppermint goes a long way! START WITH ADDING A CARRIER OIL!!

-Peppermint Vitality can be added to water to support digestion and give your water a little zing!

-Peppermint Vitality can be used to freshen your breath if you’re brave enough!! It’s strong!! I put a drop in my palm and touch my tongue to it. That’s all I can handle!!

-Peppermint goes over my lungs at night to support my respiratory system. Like I said, it encourages me to take DEEP BREATHS!

#4: Lavender

Lavender oil is like the “swiss army knife” of oils. It’s supportive for so many body systems including skin and is a very calming oil. When we have to get into the bedtime routine of the year I get a little push back! Also, my kids are worriers and they love to worry when they should be sleeping. Lavender oil is a very safe-for-children oil that I apply to their neck, back, feet, wrists and wherever else they let me to help them calm down for bedtime. I love adding this to a nightly bath to aid relaxation.

#5: Thieves Household Cleaner

Okay. So it’s not really a straight up oil, but this is something I CANNOT start the school year without! The cleaner comes in a concentrated formula, so you need to dilute it with water and add it to a spray bottle. I have a bottle of this cleaner on each floor of my home and I keep one at school also. It is a WONDERFUL plant-based cleaner that is safe for children and smells like cookies! I use this cleaner on ALL surfaces of my home – bathrooms, kitchens, glass, carpet, hardwood floors, and my classroom desks and tables. There are recipes online in which people add this cleaner to their laundry detergent to boost it, add it to soap for handsoap, and more! It’s an extremely versatile cleaner. Check out this video from YouTube showing how clean it really is!!

You guys!! How could I almost forget this one?!?! I use Stress Away every. single. day. I rub it on my wrists as perfume, spray it all over myself like a body spray and I keep this one in my purse to sniff throughout the day. This is a blend of lovely oils such as Lime, Copaiba, and Vanilla. It smells soooo good, and really does what it says on the bottle! It is my every day oil.

So that’s it! My Back-To-School Essentials list. I really could go on and on with vitamins and Ningxia Red and Emotional Oils but I had to stop somewhere!  What oils do you LOVE for back to school??

In order to get the most out of this deal, you need to order a certain amount of product. For example, when you place an order of 100 PV (100 points – pretty comparable to dollars in most cases), you earn a 5 ml. bottle of Spearmint Vitality IF you order using Essential Rewards.

I’m going to start there – Essential Rewards – what is that?

Essential Rewards Program

Young Living has created this AWESOME rewards program where you not only can earn free products RIGHT NOW with THIS E.R. ORDER, but you ALSO EARN CREDITS/POINTS/DOLLARS BACK to spend on a later Quick order.  This is how I have earned SO. MANY. FREE. THINGS.  It’s like a “try it before you buy it” type of deal because you are getting products for your points, essentially for FREE!!

So what else about E.R.?

Here’s a little graphic about what you earn back in rewards. For the first 3 months, you will earn 10% back on each purchase. You get 20% for the next 20 months, and once you are in the program for 25 months, you get 25% back on all purchases!! Back to our previously scheduled program – AUGUST PROMOS!!

Spearmint Vitality Oil

If you recall, vitality is our FDA labeled oils that are consumable. You can ingest these vitality oils along with diffusing them or applying them topically.

Spearmint oil can be blended with Peppermint Vitality for digestive system support. Take it in a veggie capsule, drop it onto your hand and rub it directly over your stomach. Add a drop to water or tea to support digestion and improve the taste of your beverage.

Spearmint is also great in the diffuser and helps give that ZING! of energy when inhaled! I love it mixed with Lemongrass or another fruity citrus-type of oil.

You can earn this lovely oil with an order of 190 PV AND being an ESSENTIAL REWARDS member. This was a freebie for me in the past and quite honestly I would never have tried it, but it is yummy!!  It has a menthol-type smell, but it’s much milder than the typical menthol smell. I use this one before yoga or meditation. It helps kind of encourage me to take really deep breaths. It’s great in the diffuser and you can apply it topically to help with immune boosting or skin support!

This is another oil you get at 190 PV – so add that up! If you are on ER and spend 190 PV, you get THREE FREE OILS right there! Plus, if you’ve come this far, you get at least 19 points back (dollars$$$$$) to spend later!

Wintergreen is refreshing – you’ve probably smelled this before. However, do not ingest this oil – it actually has a child safety cap on top because it is so super strong! This is a great addition to V6 oil or lotion to rub on sore, tired muscles. It also smells like Christmastime to me! I love that!!

Aroma Siez

We’re at the next level!! 250PV and you earn $118 in FREE OILS PLUS you’ll have 25 points to spend later!

Aroma Siez contains Basil, Marjoram, Lavender, Peppermint, and Cypress. This is another oil that would be great for any muscle relief and smells AWESOME in the diffuser!  Also, when I look at the list of oils and know what Peppermint and Lavender do for me (seasonal support!!)  I would bet that this is a good one to diffuse when the seasons start to change. Add a little Lemon and you have yourself a lovely home scent without toxic candles!!

We’ve reached the top. Spend 300PV, get all of these (if you’re on ER) and get over 30 points to spend later!! That’s laundry detergent for this month PLUS $185 free oils!!

This oils is an emotional oil blend. It has flowery parts such as Geranium, plus the grounding, earthy scent of Frankincense, and some fruity Orange and Grapefruit! It is supposed to boost feelings of self worth and self acceptance. And don’t we all need a little of that these days?!

On top of all that, you get an adorable 3 oil Bamboo Block holder (see picture at the top of the post).

Whew! That was a lot of information!  That’s what I’m here for!! I really love learning about what all of these oils can do for me, and really want to help you learn what they can do for you as well!!

So! Do you have any questions?? Let me know in the comments or contact forms! I’m happy to try to answer any and all questions!

5 Camping DIY Recipes You Need This Summer

If you like camping, or just like being outside, you will love these DIY recipes for days on the lake or in the woods. Store bought options are improving if you like more natural options like I do, but in my opinion, the best way to ensure you know what is in your product is to make it yourself. Below you will find 5 of my FAVORITE DIY summertime recipes to last you through this season!

Bugs Are Gross

Who else HATES mosquitos?? They are so irritating and come out just when the night gets good – the sun goes down and the bugs come out. I have used a variety of non-toxic or less-toxic products to keep these guys away and have found my favorite combination. I find this specific mix of essential oils helps to keep bugs off of me, my pet, and I like the way it smells. My kids have used this combo on field trips in which they hiked through long grasses and while other students had upwards of 20 ticks on them, my kids had 1. Was it the spray? Who knows, but I’m going with spraying them with this either way.

Bugs Are Gross

Keep bugs away from your fun with this plant-based DIY spray.

  • 10 drops Thieves Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 1 tsp Vodka (or another emulsifier to spread oils throughout water)
  • Water

  1. Combine all ingredients in a 2 oz. spray bottle. Adjust ingredients to your preferences. Spray liberally.

I use the spray on my clothes and skin (since I already know I can tolerate Peppermint and Thieves “neat” on my skin). If you are sensitive to either oil, you may want to only spray on your clothing or around you.

If you don’t feel like DIY-ing, you can always try Young Living’s Insect Repellent, which we LOVE around here too. It smells very citronella-y, so I still like my Peppermint/Thieves better, but to each their own. Get your Insect Repellent here.

Sun Spray

I usually get a little sun-kissed (burned, that is) on my face and shoulders during long days outdoors. I tend to forget to apply sunscreen and when I bring mine it’s a soupy mess. Plus I love the convenience of a spray-on choice. I made some sun spray for this purpose. If you do some research online, you can see that certain oils have reported SPF properties. Essential oils such as Carrot Seed, Lavender, and Raspberry Seed Oil have been reported to have SPF, but if you do a little more digging, you may find that there are articles that show there is no scientific backing to prove these oils actually have SPF properties. Nonetheless, I am including my Sun Spray recipe if you are interested in giving it a whirl: 10 drops Carrot Seed oil, 8 drops Lavender, 1 tsp. Vodka (or emulsifier) and fill with water in a 2 oz. spray bottle and spray on skin frequently throughout the day.

My personal opinion and experience have shown that when I apply coconut oil, carrot seed oil, and lavender to my face, I don’t personally burn. I usually don’t wear sunscreen though, because I am afraid of baking poison into my skin. I get regular skin checks and have not had trouble so far. These may not be results you get and may not be what you need. I have friends that FOR SURE need SPF 50 at a minimum on their skin. It really depends on genetics and how much time you spend in the sun.  You are in luck, though – Young Living has not one, but TWO options for Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. They have an SPF 10 and an SPF 50, both of which are approved by the FDA.

After Sun Spray

So after you’ve been outside all day and your skin is a little crispy, some cooling type of spray feels great. I put Peppermint in my After Sun Spray, so I’ve found that it works a little bit as a bug deterrent (because bugs hate Peppermint). It might not be as reliable as the recipe above, but it still works a little bit. So without further ado, a recipe for you:

After Sun Spray

A cooling skin spray to help soothe your sun kissed skin.

  • 8 drops lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 8 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 tbsp fractionated coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup aloe vera juice

  1. Combine the above ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake before each use. Spray on skin to cool it off.

Want another option? Try this.

Hand Sanitizing Spray

If you are outside camping and using public restrooms or porta potties (ish!) you will need this spray! Porta Potties are the absolute worst and I avoid them at all costs. So are those public restrooms at campgrounds that are a step above, but I get it, they are a necessary evil. So here’s a little Hand Sanitizer recipe for you: Fill a 2 oz. glass spray bottle with distilled water. Add 10 drops Thieves Essential Oil and 1 tsp of fractionated coconut oil. Spray away.

Go To Sleep

I don’t sleep well when I am camping. Between sharing a tent or camper space with other people, worrying about bugs, getting cold, and more. I highly recommend some type of sleepytime oil combination for your sleeping bag and pillow so that you can rest easy. Here’s my favorite blend: In a 2 oz. spray bottle, fill 1/2 with distilled water. Add 1 tsp vodka (emulsifier), 5 drops lavender oil, 5 drops cedarwood oil. Spray on sleeping bag and pillow. Relax.

Have a fun vacation!

Home Detox Challenge

When we talk Home Detox – where do you even start??

There are actually a few areas to consider when looking into your household’s toxicity. These are Air Quality, Water, Household Cleaners, Laundry, and Light Pollution.

Air Quality

Let’s start with the Air Quality in your home. I’m not just talking about furnace filters or cleaning out air ducts. I’m challenging you (see what I did there?) to consider something called “Off-Gassing”. It’s good to be aware that when you purchase any synthetic materials – whether it’s a couch, mattress, paint, carpet, rugs, etc. – that those synthetic fibers release toxins or “gasses” into your environment. This isn’t to scare you or anything; but it is important to be aware of the fact that the things you buy DO impact the air quality in your home. Some tips to consider when purchasing materials include looking for more natural options; bamboo or cork flooring over engineered hardwoods, real wood over plywood, specific mattress brands, non-treated couch fabric – you know that stain spray you can buy for your new couch – what do you think is in that??

Other things you can consider in your home are listed below:

  • Add PLANTS to your home – approximately 1 per 100 square feet can help with improving air quality
  • Open your WINDOWS – even if it’s just for a few minutes to an hour a day
  • Change FILTERS – consider the brands you purchase
  • Invest in SALT LAMPS – these can help with air quality – again, make sure you know what you are buying and make sure they are actual salt lamps and not a knock-off
  • DIFFUSE essential oils – this can be ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT things you can do for your home. They add smell, but also have benefits depending on the specific oil used. Oils can be diffused to purify the air, reduce mold and fungus (like in your basement), contribute to relaxation or focus, improve your mood, boost your immune system. If you have any questions on which oils do which specific thing – SUBSCRIBE or COMMENT below!! I am so happy to help guide you in your oil choices!!  *Disclaimer – I specifically use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils due to their Seed to Seal guarantee ( Young Living also constantly tests for purity in their oils not only IN THEIR OWN LABS (this is uncommon guys), but also they use third party labs. It’s the extra step, above and beyond.

It’s important to know what you are ingesting and bathing in daily. If you live in the city, city water contains a variety of chemicals including chlorine, flouride, and can also contain lead, copper, hormones, nitrates, and pesticides. Most of this is because they NEED to treat water so we don’t get sick, but we need to take it upon ourselves to see what’s in our water. I suggest you educate yourself on the water quality in YOUR area by searching it on the internet. Each city has a water quality report that is typically published on the government website – check yours out. Also, just because something “meets the standard” quality of water – it might not meet YOUR standard of quality. So think about that – it is up to you!!

What can you do?? Here are some ideas:

    • Install a house-wide reverse osmosis system or another purification system.
    • Buy something like a BERKEY countertop water filter. Like this:

  • Put SHOWER FILTERS on your shower heads. These are really inexpensive and make a huge difference in the water quality I use every day in my house.

So, maybe you’re thinking that you should just drink bottled water, but you guys, that is NOT a solution! First of all, you will be contributing to the enormous plastic issue we have in this world, PLUS you are INGESTING who knows what from those plastic bottles. That is not good for you. I’m just gonna lay it out there.

Also, I like to ingest oils in my water – which is completely safe when using the Young Living Vitality oil line (labeled for consumption by the FDA) BUT you need to use GLASS or STAINLESS STEEL bottles when ingesting oils. Otherwise the oils can draw toxins out of the plastic and put them into your body.  Try one of these:

Household Cleaners

This should be a no-brainer. If it smells so strong you need to hold your breath or open the window (like I used to do), then it’s obviously HORRIBLE for you! Try some of my DIY cleaners here. Or use a plant-based cleaner like Thieves from Young Living. These are not only MUCH safer for you and your family, but they are also much safer for the environment and you will be getting less junk into the ground water (see Water Quality above). Ever since I have changed my household cleaners, I can’t hardly walk past them in the store – they are SO toxic to my poor lungs!!

Your laundry is touching your skin ALL.DAY.LONG. Well, probably, or you would maybe have been arrested by now. You need to be aware of what your laundry detergent has in it and also what is in scented dryer products. First of all Fragrance is BAD NEWS. It is now being called the “New Secondhand Smoke” – that is how terrible it is for your lungs. Fragrances also contribute to developmental delays, cancers, and brain, lung, and nervous system dysfunction. Also, laundry soap is typically blue. Have you noticed that? That is because there is a chemical in the soap that is blue that was developed to stick that blue onto your clothes so that your clothes look better under florescent lights.  Seriously. It is intentional to leave blue goo behind onto your skin. Since it’s a synthetically made chemical, it does not evaporate and not only sits on your skin, but it absorbs back into your skin causing potential allergic reactions, respiratory issues, hormonal issues, and cancer. Why put your body through that???

Dryer sheets. Those puppies are FULL of fragrance and chemicals that are heated, so they not only sit on your clothes and basically poison you, but they are also heated and flung throughout your entire house (and the neighborhood) when the dryer is on. That there is cancer causing, folks. Sure, they work great to reduce static, but at what cost. You can just as easily use wool dryer balls (my friend makes some for ETSY from his very own sheep here) with a drop of essential oil on it to scent your clothing AND roll up some aluminum foil. That takes care of the static – and the foil balls last a LONG time. I personally live with the static. It’s not a big problem for me most of the time – just a small irritation.

Light Pollution

I am talking blue light here. Like the light from your tablet, iPad, phone, computer, tv. This light stops you from sleeping at night and has an extremely negative effect on your sleep patterns and brain function. I have found that I have trouble sleeping at night if I use my iPad less than an hour before I sleep. So, I tend to shut all electronics off an hour before I go to bed and start my bedtime ritual. I drink my MegaCal (magnesium/calcium) supplement, diffuse Lavender, wash my face, brush my teeth, take out my contacts, meditate, rub Lavender on my feet, put Cedarwood on my third eye area or back of neck, and read an actual book.

So there, not too scary, right? Take it one step at a time. Pick one thing you can do this week and do it. Maybe you buy some more plants. Maybe you get 1 shower filter. Just START something. Do another thing next week, and so on.

I would LOVE to hear how you are doing!!! Please comment below and let me know!
