Anxiety and Oils

I’m an oiler. I was introduced to oils years ago to replace fragrances and candles in my house. I added them to household cleaners and used them in diffusers. I slowly, very slowly, started learning about oils and some of the therapeutic qualities that they have. I started researching and adding oils to a holistic lifestyle and was so pleasantly surprised when I found out they WORKED for me!! Read on to see how they can work for you TOO!!

I’m not a doctor or an aromatherapist. All information shared is what I’ve picked up along the way. I am no stranger to email lists and learn a lot from other functional medicine doctors, chiropractors, and a variety of practitioners. I read. I listen. I use my body as a ‘guinea pig’. I don’t diagnose or treat. I stress to others to do what feels right to them. Everyone is different. What works for me might not work for you, but I really want to help you understand that it’s worth a try!!

So how do oils work for emotions and anxiety? Well, here’s the lowdown. When you inhale a scent, the smell molecules are transferred through your nose directly to your limbic system. Your limbic system deals with emotions and memories. This is why when you smell something you can be taken back into a memory so much of the time! Some smells are calming to you and some you might have a bad memory connected to, so that’s why different oils work differently for people.

In addition to scent memory, inhaling oils makes you STOP and BREATHE. Stopping an activity or getting out of an anxious moment can help you become more mindful of what is going on around you. Use your 5 senses. What are you seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling? When you focus on what is currently happening, worry about the past or future cannot break in! So STOP. Then BREATHE. When you take a deep breath, you are able to reset your parasympathetic nervous system, which can effectively slow down your heart rate and manage your stress response to help lessen feelings of anxiety or panic.

For me, inhalation and topical use of oils can definitely help my stress and anxiety when I use them BEFORE my anxiety is heightened. Consistent use throughout the day can fend off a panic attack much better than if I actually let it get to the point of having the panic attack and stopping it. So grab an oil that smells good to you! Use something that speaks to you!! Many oils have names that tell you exactly what they are for, so listen!! Stress Away, Motivation, Release, Peace & Calming, Joy, Harmony. Guess what those oil blends do?? 🙂 Start with something you like and apply it or smell it. Keep it with you in your purse or on your desk and reapply throughout the day. See what happens!! I would LOVE to hear about your favorites!! Comment below and tell me about them!
