Skin Detox: Day 1 – You Are What You Eat

Has anyone ever sat down with a bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos, eaten them all and woken up with a rash the next day? Is it just me?

Ever since I was a teenager, advice for my skin involved watching what I ate. If I ate greasy food, my skin would be greasy as well. If I ate chocolate, I’ll break out. But as a grown adult, I FINALLY see it now! It only took 20 years!  So I can’t eat Spicy Nacho Doritos. Even though I love them. They give me a rash – not a pimple, but a weird face rash.

Diet

So let’s talk about this Diet thing as it relates to your skin. Here’s the most important thing you need to remember: YOU NEED A DIET THAT WORKS FOR YOU!!!!  Maybe you can totally put down a bag of Doritos, while I’m over here seething that I can’t do that if I want clear skin. That’s fine! We are ALL DIFFERENT!!!

I’m totally sick of hearing that I have to try Paleo, Keto, a Whole 30, Weight Watchers, Vegan, Vegetarian, don’t drink milk, don’t eat carbs, eat your body weight in protein, blah blah blah!! Isn’t it enough???  I’ve done it all. I personally can’t eat a lot of meat, and red meat makes me physically ill. I need carbs. They shouldn’t be in the form of a loaf of bread, but I need carbs or I have literal panic attacks. Why? I’m not sure – it’s science and it’s MY BODY!!!

So I encourage you to go out there and figure out what works for your body! I have tons of friends that do so well on Keto or Paleo and they LOVE it. Not for me. Talk to a doctor. Talk to a dietician. Talk to a naturopath or someone. Try it – see what will work for you.

That being said, it’s common knowledge these days that the chemicals in processed food will make you fat. You should eat a diet that varies in food types – try not to get stuck in a rut!  Eat Real Food. Mostly Plants. Michael Pollen, Deepak Chopra, a variety of Ayurvedic medicine practitioners all say that. That doesn’t mean that you can’t eat meat. It means to add more plants to what you already are eating.

So what should I eat?

Eat the best diet for you. If you have dry skin hydrate with tons of water and increase healthy fats! Those will help plump up your skin. If you have oily skin, you might have liver buildup or metabolism problems – look at how much fat you’re eating. In this case, fat can be building up in your system and coming out as oil. Do you have frequent breakouts? Your elimination organs might be overwhelmed (kidney, liver). Take it easy on those guys. Drink more water. Stop eating after supper and allow them to have some time to digest and rid your body of food, toxins, and waste. Is your skin red or rashy? You are having an allergic response to something or maybe the inside of your body is too “hot”. You’re eating spicy foods and need to cool it down. Like me, and the Spicy Nacho Doritos. I need to combat that heat with cooling foods like yogurt.

Circulation is important.

In order to have optimal blood supply to your skin to improve texture, color, and get nutrients to where they should be, you need to improve your overall cardiovascular health. You can do this by increasing certain foods that contain antioxidants and have general healthy benefits such as berries, citrus fruits containing Vitamin C – especially LEMON, avocado, chia, whole grains, almonds, pumpkin seeds, garlic, and dark chocolate.  If you are currently working on improving your blood and cardiovascular system you should avoid animal fats, dairy, soy, gluten, vegetable oil, caffeine and alcohol. I know those are all fun – wine and cheese? coffee and cream? But if you want healthier skin, give it a go!

Give your liver a hand.

Your liver takes great care of your body. All things flow through that organ and its job is to detoxify junk and organize nutrients to get where they are going. Your liver is so busy all day long working on detoxing metals, environmental toxins, processed food chemicals, chemicals in water, and air, and then if you have a drink or two at night – it’s busy working on that too! So you want to help your liver out.

Do so by decreasing the amount of animal protein you eat and INCREASE the amount of nutrient dense plants you consume. Eat more greens, fruits, veggies. You know you should, now you just have a reason WHY!! Avoid fried foods.Eat more zucchini, squash, beans, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, apples, bananas, grapefruit, beets, leafy greens, avocados, broccoli and cauliflower. Yum!!

Limit processed foods and limit medications if you can. This for me is where essential oils came in. If I get an ache or pain that I would normally have taken an over-the-counter medicine for, I will now try an oil FIRST. I still may end up taking the medicine, but I’m greatly reducing the impact these meds have on my liver by managing my needs with other things. Have a headache? Drink more water. Take a nap, Try Peppermint oil. If that doesn’t work – grab the ibuprofen. Period Cramps? Same thing – drink water, take a rest, stretch, use Peppermint or PanAway on my stomach. Then reach for the meds. Do you see what I’m saying? Listen to your body. You might not be in the same position I am yet to hold off on meds right away; only YOU will be able to know that.

Drink warm lemon water and green tea as well as water. This will help flush those toxins out of your body and support your liver to do it’s thing.

Where should I start??

I know, that’s a lot of info. I get it. So here’s a little list you can use to start changing your diet and routine up a little bit in order to help your skin (and body) out!!

  1. Drink water with lemon.  Try it warm or hot.
  2. Drink green smoothies!!! ADD GREENS to your diet!! If you don’t like it – try something like Multigreens.
  3. Take a probiotic to help your gut out!! I LOVE Life 9 and my kids totally dig MightyPro.
  4. Become Veggie Centric with your meals. Eat protein if you want but ADD MORE VEGGIES!!!
  5. Use seeds for Omega 3s – I like Chia or Flax. You can try Omegagize too.
  6. Use Turmeric. Make a little Turmeric Latte – add Thieves or Black Pepper EO to give it a boost.
  7. Drink herbal tea.
