My Favorite Things – Spring Edition

It’s springtime and that means a fresh start for everyone!

I thought it’s time to let you know about a few things that I’m LOVING right now.

Without further ado, here we go!

  1. Reusable Water Bottles – I love glass or stainless steel water bottles. Stainless is my favorite because it is extremely durable and can withstand my clumsiness. I add a drop or two of Lemon Vitality oil and raw Apple Cider Vinegar to my water, which you can totally do in a stainless steel water bottle. Also, no yucky plastics – seriously get rid of that junk! AND you are creating less waste when drinking from a reusable water bottle.

2. Spray Bottles – I mix all my spring scents in these little blue bottles, and spray them all over. Some good mixes: Purification and Lemon, Grapefruit and Peppermint, or Lemon and Lavender.

3. Cleaner Bottles – For Spring Cleaning with Thieves Cleaner. You can also get those cute vinyl stickers from Etsy to stick on these bottles to mix up the cleaner.

4. Himalayan Salt Lamp – I know these are “so last year” but I love mine. I keep it on most of the time, and it adds a nice glow to the room, plus it boasts air purification properties and it is supposed to reduce allergy and asthma symptoms. Put it in the same room as the diffuser and add LLP (Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint) and freshen up the air.

5. Cultivate by Lara Casey – This book has been a God-send for this season of my life. It gives action steps to help let go of feeling like I have to “do it all” in order to be a good mom, teacher, or woman. It’s a breath of fresh air. Read it.

6. Flair Pens – All the colors. They write nicely. I make my lists pretty. Love.

7. Green plants and Succulents – I’ve been buying them up at all of the places. They are at the grocery store, Target, and Home Depot – if you want to start buying some too!  I’m really trying to keep them all alive, so I’m starting small.

8. Foam Roller – This is new to me. I use this thing all the time and am thinking about getting another one to bring to work. I have pretty bad posture and work either on the computer or with kids, so I’m always hunching over, making my back hurt most of the day. I seriously just roll back on this baby and am good to go! I got the one with bumps because my chiropractor told me to, but it was a little hard at first.

Those are my favorite Spring things! What is something you HAVE to have? Let me know in the comments! I would love to see what is out there!

Top 10 Oils You NEED…and what to do with them

Essential oils have been a HUGE part of my life in the past few years. I use them for all different parts of my life – health and wellness, supporting my body systems, replacing household products, and replacing beauty products. I truly use oils all day long. I decided that maybe I should give a list of MY top 10 oils. These are oils I reach for every day. Here we go!!

  1. Lemon:

    • Put a drop of lemon vitality in your water to give it a citrus-y boost!
    • Add a couple of drops of Lemon Vitality in your pancake, cake, or waffles.
    • Lemon in the diffuser smells great!
    • Support skin health – cleanse your skin and look young! (use at night to avoid possible photosensitivity)
    • It contains limonene, which supports many systems including cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, digestive, and excretory systems.
  2. Lavender:

    • Calming for bedtime – diffuse or spray in your bedroom
    • Add a few drops to the bathtub for a soothing, relaxing spa-like experience
    • Rub it on your feet before you go to sleep
    • Supports skin health – especially gentle on face and great for any skin traumas
    • Supports seasonal respiratory problems – diffuse, inhale or apply topically
    • Supports your nervous system and aids in relaxation
    • Just typing about lavender made me relax. So that’s cool. 🙂
  3. Peppermint:

    • Soothing for your digestive system – rub it on your tummy or add a drop to water
    • Helps “open up” the respiratory system when put on lungs or sinuses – use a carrier oil!
    • Ingest Peppermint Vitality oil for fresh breath or add it to your coffee for a yummy treat
    • Helps stimulate your nervous system to increase focus and energy – diffuse or inhale from the bottle
    • Can aid in relaxing tense muscles after workouts or in stressful situations
  4. Tea Tree (Melaleuca)

    • Great for cleaning anything in your home
    • Put it on your skin – great for oily skin or blemishes while being gentle
    • Spray it on your scalp or mix it into your shampoo or conditioner
    • Combines well with lemon for cleaning properties and for getting rid of odors in your house
    • Can treat mold – diffuse it with clove in a smelly basement
  5. Frankincense

    • An all-time favorite for grounding and calming for me
    • Supports the immune system – take internally in a capsule or under tongue
    • Great for supporting your skin health! Gentle on the skin and may help aging skin
    • Supports Nervous, Cardiovascular, and Endocrine systems as well as Respiratory
    • A great “g0-to” oil for anything that is bothering you!
  6. Oregano

    • Extremely powerful immune support
    • Put it on your feet if you feel like something might be coming on (then put on socks so you don’t smell like a pizza parlor 🙂 )
    • Use short-term, because it really is powerful
    • It is a “hot” oil, so use carrier with it – it will definitely tingle on your skin
  7. Stress Away

    • This is a Young Living-specific blend that contains copaiba, lime, cedarwood, and more
    • Brings peace to my daily life
    • Diffuse throughout your house for a low-stress day
    • Put on diffuser jewelry – earrings, bracelet, or scarves for an all-day smell
  8. Clove

    • Supports dental health – a key ingredient in the Thieves line of oral care
    • Supports immune system – also an ingredient in Thieves oil
    • When diffused, helps purify the air while smelling like a fall day – Yum!
  9. Thieves

    • Another Young Living specific blend containing cloves, cinnamon, rosemary, and more
    • Spicy and warm smell for the diffuser – smells great and gives a good immune boost
    • Supports immune system – use daily in a roller on your feet or spine
    • Key ingredient in the Thieves cleaners, soaps, and oral care
  10. Orange

    • A great addition to any oil in the diffuser
    • Helps improve focus and may have calming affects on people
    • An uplifting scent I add to cleaning products for a citrus-y smell

So there are some of my favorites!

My advice to you is to get these oils and put them in your house!! Keep Lavender, Tea Tree, and Frankincense (Frank) in your bathroom to add to your nighttime routine. Lemon, Orange, and Peppermint can be in the kitchen to add to water or diffusers. Thieves should be right next to your diffuser with Orange! Stress Away needs to be near your old perfume/body spray bottle – GET RID OF THAT and use Stress Away instead for a less toxic choice of smell.  Oregano is in my “medicine cabinet” so I can reach for it for short-term immune support. Remember to keep carrier oil close by.  Clove is with the Oregano – again for immune support.

How I Use Oils Every Day – A Simple Routine

I LOVE my oils!! In fact, I love each and every produce from Young Living that I use.  But I’ll start with the oils. I want to let you know what oils I use daily and how I use them. I think that is the most confusing part of starting an oily life – where to start!!

So, here’s an example of my day – start to finish – with my oily little loves:

6:00 – Wake Up!! It’s always too early… scrape my tongue, put on my yoga clothes. Grab a scent to inhale – lately it’s been Lemongrass. I put a drop in my hands, rub them together and cup them over my mouth and nose. Take a few deep breaths. Get ready.

6:10 – Work Out – I love youtube yoga workouts. There are a wide variety out there – I prefer 20-30 minutes in the morning.

6:30 – Spray my mat. I have a yoga mat cleaner recipe I’ll link here later that contains Tea Tree and Thieves oils.

6:35 – Oil pull and dry brush. I add Orange vitality oil to my coconut oil and swish it around. I put a drop on my dry brush and brush while my shower warms up.

6:45 – Get ready for the day – I use Thieves Toothpaste, and spray my hair with hair tonic made of Rosemary, Peppermint, and Tea Tree oil. If I have a blemish on my face, I’ll put Tea Tree oil on it immediately. I usually wear Stress Away and Patchouli on my wrists or my diffusing jewelry. I spray myself with my secret recipe of Peace and Calming 2, Patchouli, and Orange.

7:15 – Go to work. Make sure I grab a shot of Ningxia and put Lemon in my water bottle (stainless steel). I keep an extra bottle of Lemon Vitality in my desk drawer for more water throughout the day.

10:45 – I probably have a headache or some form of muscle tension – I keep Peppermint and Deep Relief in my purse for just such an occasion. I also keep Breathe Again in there.

4:00 – Arrive Home! I pick up the kids on the way. Once we’re home, I diffuse Thieves and Orange or Lemon. I love diffusing when we get home.

6:30 – Bath. I loooove baths and they are my relaxation during the day – when people leave me along and I can sit in silence. I usually add epsom salt and baking soda to my tub and add a variety of oils that I feel like that day. Favorites are relaxing Lavender, Orange, Grapefruit, Stress Away, or maybe Peppermint (be careful with Peppermint!! It can get really hot on your skin in the water – I keep coconut oil nearby just in case).

9:00 – Bedtime. I use ART facial products mostly, but have made my own DIY facewash at times. I like Frankincense on my face and the back of my neck. I will drip Valor down my spine, and put Lavender in my palm with sweet almond oil and rub on my feet. I might diffuse Cedarwood and Lavender or just put a drop of Cedarwood on my third eye area or the crown of my head. If I wake up at night, I find that Peace and Calming is the easiest to help me relax and fall right back to sleep.

So that’s it! I just go about my day and oils have fit seamlessly into it!!

Most of these oils are available in the Premium Starter Kit offered by Young Living. If you are interested in signing up for the kit – you would be a member of my team and I’ll help you along! Click HERE to join!! I would LOVE to have you!!

DIY Household Cleaners

I have always been sensitive to cleaners and smells of cleaners. When I used to scrub out my tub in the bathroom, I would open the window, turn on the fan, and hold my breath before I started. I would scrub away, run out of the room and gasp for air. On top of that, my hands would burn and smell like toxic cleaners for the rest of the day.

So, I started looking for other options. Problem was, greener, “healthier” cleaners still smell gross and can be EXPENSIVE.  I found recipes online and tweaked them so I could make them smell like my favorite essential oil smells. I LOVE Grapefruit and Orange when cleaning.

Here’s a list of my favorite household cleaner “go-to” oils:

Tea Tree – Contains multiple terpenes in the oil. Several monoterpene derivatives have antibacterial properties.

Grapefruit – Smells fresh and citrus-y. Great addition to cleaner. Also contains monoterpenes.

Orange – Also a yummy smell – and contains (guess what??) monoterpenes (!).

Lemon – Fresh smell, whitening power, and somehow gets rid of sticky substances (think goo gone).

Other things I use for household cleaner are:

Vinegar – reduces microbial contaminants, but doesn’t really get rid of the dirt

Baking Soda – good scrubber – gentle, yet powerful

Castile Soap – Cuts grease and grime

Here’s a secret though. A lot of people love to add baking soda and vinegar together, but guess what? When you mix baking soda and vinegar, you get the chemical equivalent of H2O. That’s right! Water!! So, don’t do it – it’s not going to really do anything. I mean, it’s fun for volcanos or fun for my kids to mess with, but that’s about it.

I made you some recipe cards if you want to print them off. Download Recipes.

Spring Cleaning Checklist

It’s that time of year!

I start getting antsy and need to get things clean. I work full-time outside of my home, so it just never seems like enough time. This means that basically, I need to be extremely organized in my cleaning, and it does take some time, because I don’t want to do it all in one day!

I can share some tips and tricks with you. Start at the top and work your way down. This applies to your house as well as each room. If you have a 2-story house, start upstairs and work your way down. I also have a little checklist you can download and print FOR FREE!!!

Where Should You Begin??: 4 Easy Steps to Detoxify Your Life

Essential Oil Detox Ideas

Healthy living and detoxification is a scary topic. Especially when you first get started.

Take a look at that tub of anti-bacterial wipes on your counter. What’s in them? Do you know what I found out? It doesn’t say. That’s right. The FDA does not regulate household cleaners. So they do not have to disclose what is inside them. I’ll tell you what’s inside some of them – bad stuff. I’ve made you a short list of some of the offenders:

  1. Phthaletes – These guys are endocrine disrupters. Endocrine disrupters affect the hormones in your body. They can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, infertility, low IQ, obesity, diabetes, and endometriosis. They can interfere with brain development of babies and children. They may cause allergies and preterm labor. They also may disrupt insulin function. Phthaletes can be found in plastics, shampoos, perfume, soaps, hair spray, nail polish.
  2. Triclosan – This lovely chemical can contribute to food allergies and sensitivities. It was mandated to be removed from hand sanitizers, but can still be found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes. Right. You shouldn’t put it on your hands, but you can eat it. That sounds great.
  3. Organophosphate Pesticide – Neurotoxins that were originally made for use in chemical warfare and now account for about 1/2 of all pesticides used in the United States. (CNN article)
  4. 2-Butoxyethanol – A bone toxin that may cause discoordination in otherwise healthy adults and children.

If you look into information from a variety of news stations and/or the Environmental Working Group, you can read more about it. But I will give you a very short checklist of what steps you can take in your own life!

Click here for a link the the Environmental Working Group’s website. They have a TON of information on what is going on in our country and world today. Also, I like to use the Skin Deep data base (found HERE) to check out the products I have in my home right now. You can type in your current facewash, moisturizers, shampoos, soaps, and more to see a rating scale of the contents of your current products.

Steps to Start Detoxifying Your Life

Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Detox your household cleaners. There are many options – DIY cleaners, straight up vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, or I use Thieves Cleaner. I use it on EVERYTHING in my house. Kitchen, bathroom, glass, carpets, furniture. It’s a concentrated bottle, so you use approximately 1 TBSP to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle and go to town. Order it today. You will thank me!! Click here.

Step 2: Detox your skin care products. Anything you put on your body goes IN your body. Start with things that stay on your body for a long time – lotions, sprays, face creams. Then move on to other body care products – soap, shampoo, toothpaste. Start on the Skin Deep data base to check out the things you have right now. Decide if you really want that on your skin all day.

Step 3: Detox your body. Try a cleanse. Young Living has a lovely cleansing trio to make it easier for you. Get the junk out so you can start fresh with Step 4!

Step 4: Eat a healthy diet! Plant-based (eat meat if you want to – I’m not your boss). Organic is preferred.

A great way to get started on this healthy lifestyle is to leave me your email address in the subscribe section. I’ll contact you with a step-by-step guide to starting on this journey. I’m excited for you!!!
